Christy, Lawson and Olivia headed south to kick off the 2016 season in early April. The only experienced partnership was Lawson and Agitated Hawk. Christy, a preliminary competitor, had a last minute mount change and pulled Vodka Tonic from the pasture to contest the horse’s first horse trial. Our 3rd pair to compete was Olivia and her new mount Grace.
Christy had a lovely warmup with Tonic, but the inexperienced mount was completely overwhelmed by the dressage arena. Thankfully, Christy had a good sense of humor with the exuberant gelding and was able to chalk up their entertaining test to experience and move forward with their weekend. They had a nice ride cross-country with just one stop for the horse’s first time on a cross-country course away from home. They put in a double clear show jumping round to earn 7th place finish in the Beginner Novice division.
Olivia and Grace tackled the rider’s first USEA recognized horse trial this weekend. The pair are just developing their partnership and this BN was an excellent test for them. The excitement of a big show was a bit intimidating as they trotted down centerline and the dressage score reflected that. They started to settle by the time cross-country came around and had a complete blast galloping around Olivia’s first recognized horse trial and only her second cross-country course. One unfortunate rail at the end of an otherwise lovely show jumping round dropped them just out of the ribbons, but this is an exciting pair to watch for the future. We are so proud of their efforts this weekend.
Lawson and Agitated Hawk carried a new relaxed attitude into the dressage arena and their efforts over the winter paid off with a personal best dressage score to sit 5th. They clocked around the Novice course double clear which include a ditch and wall as well as a trakehner. They had a nice, forward show jumping round to finish with a 4th place finish on their dressage score.
Next up on the Stone Ridge calendar is the West End Farm Combined Test in Grandview, MO on Sunday, April 10th. We will bring the full Stone Ridge contingency to the Mill Creek Pony Club USEA recognized Horse Trials at the same venue in May.
